5 easy ways to help your lawn this spring
Would you like to have the best looking lawn in your neighborhood? It all starts with taking the right approach. Here are 5 easy ways you can help your lawn wake up from its winter slumber:
- Clean Your Yard: This sounds basic, but I can’t tell you how many times I see yards in the spring that were never cleaned the previous fall. The result? The turf is often a disaster. If you’re not sure where, to begin with, lawn care, start by simply cleaning the yard. Pick up any sticks, leaves, and debris that will otherwise mat and damage turf or make it too difficult to properly maintain throughout the year (e.g., mowing).
- Power Rake, if Necessary: Contrary to popular belief, do not dethatch or aerate your lawn in the spring. This can actually stress the grass. Dethatching and aerating should only be done in late summer or fall. Instead, lightly rake up matted areas of your lawn in the spring. If left unkempt, matted areas will rot and the turf will die.
- Feed Your Lawn: You can begin feeding your lawn at any time of the year, but there’s no better time to start than in the spring when your turf is beginning to grow again. It’s important to regularly feed your lawn with the proper amount of nutrients. If you’re unsure, ask a professional.
- Develop a Plan and Stick With It: Overwhelmed by the thought of having to care for your lawn all by yourself? We understand: It’s a lot of work! However, this tall task is made easier when you establish a long term lawn and landscaping plan and sticking with it.
- Mow Your Lawn Regularly: Keeping up with mowing your turf is extremely important, especially in the spring when grass grows quickly. You’ll need to make sure you’re not only mowing your turf to the correct height but that you’re doing so in the right way.
We recommend creating a list of all the different ways you currently care for your turf and figuring out what you’re able to do and what you simply can’t or don’t have time to accomplish. This is where a lawn care professional can step in and assist.
