While lawn care companies in New England typically stop working right as the cold, winter air begins to move in, caring for lawns is actually a year-round acitvity. Why? Because turf always needs to be cared for even when as it begins to move into its dormant, winter state.
From the spring to fall, we distribute the right amount of Nitrogen to help your lawn actively grow. But right as colder weather drifts into the Northeast, we take a different approach. We decrease the amount of Nitrogen we place onto your lawn and instead increase the amount of Potassium.
Here are the benefits of our wintizer:
- Promotes Root Growth: Our winterizers have a lower nitrogen count and more potassium. This is for a good reason. Nitrogen promotes blade growth while potassium helps roots grow strong. The last thing we want to do is encourage blade growth, especially right before the snow arrives. Snow can cause long blades to become matted, which can cause lawns to rot out.
- Improves Spring Growing: Right before turf goes dormant, its blades still hold a lot of nutrients, which have to go somewhere. These nutrients travel right to root systems which causes roots to go through a growth spurt. The following spring the lawn’s root systems are massive as a result, and in the perfect state to absorb increased amounts of nutrients (this time with a higher concentration of nitrogen) and more water. Coupled with the already stored nutrients in the roots, your lawn is provided the jump start it needs to grow strong and tall quickly, enabling it to beat out vicious, aggressive winter and spring annual weeds.
- Decreases Winter Disease and Damage: Potassium helps regulate water pressure inside and outside of cells walls, which is necessary for good root development. Turf that has thin cells walls are easily damaged are more likely to be infected with spring diseases such as dollar spot. brown patch and mold. Potassium plays a key role in resisiting diseases.
- Increase Cold Tolerance and Ability to Endure Stress: A truly healthy lawn is one that doesn’t just have strong blades but a vast, deep root system. If a winterizer was applied in the spring, root systems typically have greater depth and girth, leaf turgor pressure, rigidity, strength and thicker cell walls. This helps them take on stressful environmental conditions, such as drought.
As you can see, lawns aren’t just about what you can see above ground, but also what happens below the soil. That’s why GreenAce Lawn Care applies a critical winterizer right before the ground freezes. Doing so improves root growth, strength and health, which helps blades grow quickly in the spring and better handle dry weather in the summer.
